The rectorate building of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is one of the last major projects by architect Renaat Braem and was completed in 1976.
Braem turned it into a masterpiece—a total work of architecture rich in meaning. Its formal language, the ellipse, the canopy, the pervasive symbolism, and the murals all reflect a humanist worldview rooted in free inquiry, aiming to understand the world not through revelation, but through human conviction, presence, and knowledge.
Following its recent renovation by Origin Architecture & Engineering, the building now stands more than ever as a symbol of the VUB community.
